Lesson 06 — The Language of Landscape
Boats in the Landscape
The lesson
How to draw a boat — and how to make it belong to the landscape.
As landscape painters we often meet boat scenes, and their success depends on how well the boats are integrated into the subject. It can be challenging — not only because of the particular shape of a boat, but because of its place in the composition. Compared with the large shapes of a landscape, boats are small shapes we use to emphasise a point of interest.
The lesson looks closely at every aspect of drawing and painting boats, in three parts: construction and drawing, composition and integration, technique.
